Capital is home to 67 billionaires: London now top European destination for super-rich whose average London home will cost more than £10m

The average billionaire is worth £1.79 billion, has four luxury homes and more than £350 million cash in the bank, research revealed yesterday.
There are 2,170 billionaires around the world with a combined worth of £3.88 trillion - double the figure from five years ago.
And London is the number one chosen destination in Western Europe for the super-rich - with 67 of these people living in the capital.

Paris boasts 25 billionaires while tax haven Geneva has just 18 residents with assets running into ten-figures.
Of these, 60 per cent are self-made billionaires, 20 per cent have inherited wealth with 20 per cent having part-inherited, part-made fortunes.
The likes of Roman Abramovich and Lakshmi Mittal will typically own four homes around the world.Incredibly, they will never spend less than £10 million on a house in London unless it is for a servant. And it's traditional family homes, which they choose for their number one residence.
This is according to the Ultra Prime Barometer Survey, which yesterday revealed the average billionaire has at least £50 million of homes.
The research, by Beauchamp Estates and Dataloft, looks into the property portfolios of ultra high net worth individuals (UHNWI) across Western Europe.

In London, the elite buy mansions in the 'platinum triangle' of Mayfair, Knightsbridge and Belgravia but also look for palatial residences in St Johns Wood and Regents Park.
It costs a staggering £250,000 a year to maintain each of these London properties with huge amounts spent on insurance, security and utility bills.

On top of London, billionaires also need a European beachside home in their property portfolio, with the French Riviera, Tel Aviv, Tuscany and Greek islands the most popular locations.
These people are typically worth £1.79 billion and 86 per cent of them are married. They are family people with 2.1 children.
On average, they hold 42 per cent of their wealth (£760m) in private holdings, 35 per cent (£630m) in publicly held companies, 18 per cent (£350m) in cash, three per cent (£50m) in property and two per cent (£35m) in luxury assets such as artwork, yachts and private jet travel.
Three-quarters have a home in a city which is crucial to their financial, banking and business interest.
This helps boost London’s position as the number one Western European destination of the super-rich.
And it is all about the 'S' word with the wealthy buyers wanting a select location, size, space, security and a high specification.
The average London ultra prime residence, which the billionaires battle it out to own, has six bedroom suites and four reception rooms.
Most (96 per cent) have an outside garden, 39 per cent have a private swimming pool, 43 per cent have a cinema and 43 per cent have a gated driveway.
Beauchamp Estate believe it is a 'badge of billionaire membership' to have a London mansion in the 'platinum triangle' or St Johns Wood and Regents Park.
Gary Hersham, director of Beauchamp Estates, said: 'We advise UHNWI buying homes in London and around the Mediterranean to set aside budgets of typically £50 million to acquire the right properties.
'Most UHNWI buying in Western Europe see having an ultra prime home in Prime Central London and on the French Riviera as 'must have' badges.
'Others then decide they also want a Tuscan estate or residence on the Greek islands which adds another £10 million.'

JAMIE REDKNAPP: If Liverpool can beat Man City and Chelsea to the Premier League title it'll be GREAT for English football

It's the time when people start talking about awards, but there is no question Liverpool should win the double.
Luis Suarez has been magnificent and Brendan Rodgers is a class act.
They are the player and manager of the year. Liverpool had success under Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez, but never played with the same style as Rodgers’ side.

Top of the table

Last year they were 28 points off the title and now they lead by two. That is an incredible turnaround. Glen Johnson said it would be good for neutrals if Liverpool won the title, but it would be great for English football full stop.
They play such fantastic football with a British manager and Sunday had six Englishmen in their starting XI.
Suarez and Rodgers should win the individual awards, but they will want to make it a magnificent treble with the title.

Australian vessels head to southern Indian Ocean to check if MH370 has been found

Australian Maritime Safety Authority says that objects of different sizes, with the largest being 24 metres (79 feet), have been spotted in satellite imagery of an area off Perth.

Canberra: Australian ships and planes are heading to an area in the southern Indian Ocean where objects believed to be parts of missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 were spotted.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority said in a news conference that the objects were of different sizes with the largest being 24 metres (79 feet), but cautioned that there is still a need to verify the objects seen in satellite imagery.
"The objects are relatively indistinct. The indication to me is of objects  that are of a reasonable size and probably awash with water and bobbing up and  down over the surface," said Australian Maritime Safety Authority official John Young.
A Hercules aircraft is expected in the area off Perth where AMSA said visibility is poor, to drop data marker buoys to collect information on water movement.
The AMSA also said there are "blobs" on the water surface and there is a need to "locate and recover what we are looking for... and confirmation that it belongs to the aircraft".
At the same time, the AMSA cautioned that the "imagery is not that precise" although the objects sighted in the MH370 search is the "best lead we have".
"This is a lead, it is probably the best lead we have right now. But we  need to get there, find them, see them, assess them, to know whether it's  really meaningful or not," said Young.
The AMSA news conference came shortly after Malaysian Acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein told reporters in Kuala Lumpur, "I can confirm we have a new lead" when asked about objects found in the southern Indian Ocean thought to be part of the Malaysian airliner that's been missing for 12 days.
With both Australia and Malaysia cautious on raising hopes, officials in KL have stressed the need to "verify" the possible Australian find.
"We have been very consistent. We want to verify, we want to corroborate," said Hishammuddin at Kuala Lumpur  International Airport, where he is overseeing an international search effort.

Man United seek Champions League comeback

Manchester United manager David Moyes will lead his team into battle against Olympiakos in the Champions League on Wednesday potentially needing to make history in order to save his job.

MANCHESTER: Manchester United manager David Moyes will lead his team into battle against Olympiakos in the Champions League on Wednesday potentially needing to make history in order to save his job.
The reigning English champions trail 2-0 to their Greek counterparts following the first leg of the last 16 tie and have never previously overturned a two-goal deficit in the competition's knockout phase.
Sunday's humbling 3-0 loss at home to Liverpool left United 18 points off the pace in the Premier League and 12 points below the top four, and having already exited both domestic cup competitions, Wednesday's game at Old Trafford represents a last opportunity to salvage their season.
British press reports suggest that Moyes may not survive the setback of elimination at the hands of Olympiakos, who have lost on all of their 11 previous visits to England.
The former Everton manager struck a defiant tone in his pre-game press conference, however, declaring that his future "has not changed one bit" and insisting that he still retains the full support of the club's board.
He also cited a 3-0 victory over Barcelona in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1984 as reason to believe that United are capable of turning the tie around against the newly crowned Greek champions.
"We will try and do that," said Moyes, who succeeded storied former United manager Alex Ferguson at the end of last season.
"It is only twice that Manchester United have done that (overturn a 2-0 deficit in Europe in a home game).
"Nineteen-eighty-four was the recent one, against Barcelona. Robbo (Bryan Robson) I think it was with the two goals.
"It is not something that has happened a lot, but it is something we have to make happen."
Moyes is also aware of the debt that he owes to United's supporters, who continued to vocally back the team until the very end of Sunday's loss to Liverpool.
"The first thing I mentioned to the players was that me, the team, we need to make sure to give them a night to remember," he said.
"We will leave nothing behind on the night hopefully and give everything to get through to the next round."
United offered disconcertingly little resistance in the first-leg loss to Olympiakos in Piraeus on February 25, but defender Patrice Evra says the team are supremely motivated to make amends.
"We have not been in this situation before," he said.
"We were always playing to win the league, win the Champions League, but you have to show your character, your personality.
"We don't want to think about Sunday. It is gone, the past is the past. Now the game tomorrow (Wednesday) is the most important thing."
Moyes reported no fresh injuries after the defeat by Liverpool, but centre-backs Chris Smalling (hamstring) and Jonny Evans (calf) remain unavailable and Spanish midfielder Juan Mata is cup-tied.
Olympiakos's first-leg success unexpectedly proved the catalyst for a downturn in their domestic fortunes, as they slumped to consecutive defeats -- their first of the season -- against Panathinaikos and PAOK.
They returned to winning ways on Saturday, however, beating Panthrakikos 2-0 at the Karaiskakis Stadium to secure a 41st Greek league title -- their fourth in succession.
Manager Michel rested several first-team players with a view to Wednesday's game, but experienced forward Javier Saviola is a doubt after playing only a limited role in Tuesday's eve-of-match training session.
"We know the game lasts 90 minutes, so even if we score, we definitely won't think the game is over," said captain Avraam Papadopoulos, whose team last reached the quarter-finals in 1999.
"We're not stressed, but we understand the importance of the game. It's one of the most important games the team has ever played."
Michel added: "My players aren't scared of anything. Maybe the manager is a bit more scared than them, but as they're playing, I can assure you they won't be scared of anything."

J-League denies match-fixing

Japan's professional football league has said an internal probe turned up no evidence to support suspicions that a recent match was fixed, as it wrestles with an embarrassing racism scandal.

TOKYO: Japan's professional football league has said an internal probe turned up no evidence to support suspicions that a recent match was fixed, as it wrestles with an embarrassing racism scandal.
The J-League launched an investigation earlier this month after a FIFA unit said it had noticed unusual online betting patterns in a March 8 game between Sanfrecce Hiroshima and Kawasaki Frontale.
Betting on football is legal in Japan. But FIFA's Early Warning System, launched in 2007 to fight corruption in world football, spotted an abnormal rise in bets that Kawasaki would lead the match at half-time, with its rival prevailing by the final whistle.
That turned out to be a profitable bet. Sanfrecce overcame a 1-0 half-time deficit to beat Kawasaki 2-1.
After questioning players, coaches, officials, referees and other people involved in the match, the league said in a statement on its website Tuesday that there was "no trace at all" of match-fixing.
"If wrongdoing is proven, any player involved in it will be expelled (from the league) forever and any club involved in it will not survive," J-League chairman Mitsuru Murai told reporters Tuesday.
"Our technical and referee committees analysed the game by film and found nothing unusual. We even drew a second opinion from overseas."
The claims came at a bad time for the 21-year-old league as it moves to repair its image following the appearance of a racist banner at a home match for the popular Urawa Red Diamonds.
Several Urawa supporters hung a banner that read "Japanese only" in English, at an entrance to stands behind the goal at their home stadium near Tokyo during a match earlier this month.
As a penalty, the J-League ordered Urawa's next home match on Sunday to be played in an empty stadium with no fans in attendance.

Chaos Erupts at Press Update About Missing Malaysia Airlines Jet

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Raw emotion and anger boiled over Wednesday when distressed family members of missing passengers aboard Flight 370 were forcibly removed from the daily news conference by officials.
At least two crying women entered the media briefing room in the Malaysian capital shortly before the briefing was due to begin and unfurled a protest banner.
“I want my son back,” sobbed one of the women, who were shoved into a side room before being taken away by police and officials while being chased by a scrum of reporters inside Kuala Lumpur's Sama-Sama Hotel.
The chaotic and upsetting scenes came on the 12th day of the investigation and as emotions ran high over the lack of progress in the search for the plane. On Tuesday, relatives in China threatened to go on hunger strike in protest at the absence of information about their loved ones.
“We can’t stand it any more,” one of the women added.
The three-yard long, half-a-yard wide white banner, with Chinese script, was rolled up by security officials.
It was not clear if the women were removed to the second room to silence their protest or for their own safety as the surging crowd of news crews threatened to become out of control.

Sightings of Missing Malaysian Airlines Jet over Maldives 'Not True'

Investigators hunting for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 have discounted reports the plane may have been spotted over the Maldives, an official said Wednesday.
Malaysia's Acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said the sightings had been investigated by police in the Maldives and were determined to be untrue.Several residents of Kudahuvadhoo, one of the more remote atolls in the Indian Ocean island chain nation, had reported seeing a low-flying aircraft on the morning of March 8, when the Boeing 777 disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
“The Malaysian chief of the defense force has contacted his counterpart in the Maldives, who has confirmed that these reports are not true,” Hishammuddin said.
The Associated Press contributed to his report.
