Real Madrid's young forward Jesé faces a lengthy period on the sidelines after rupturing the cruciate ligament in his right knee in Tuesday'sChampions League win over Schalke.
The 21-year-old was knocked to the ground and landed awkwardly when he tangled with the Schalke defender Sead Kolasinac in the second minute of Real's 3-1 second-leg victory at the Bernabéu and had to be replaced by Gareth Bale.
"He has had bad luck and everyone at Real Madrid has had bad luck because we will lose a young player who has been doing very well this season," said the Real's coach Carlo Ancelotti. "But this is football and players suffer injuries at times during their careers. We are sad and it has affected us a lot but it could be a chance for him to build strength of character. We have to stay positive.
"We will help him through it and wait for him to come back next season."
Real stormed into the Champions League quarter-finals with a club record 9-2 aggregate success after Cristiano Ronaldo struck twice in the second leg. The Spaniards were virtually assured of a place in the last eight after thrashing the Bundesliga side 6-1 in Gelsenkirchen and Ancelotti rested a host of regulars for the return with an eye on Sunday's La Liga Clásico against Barcelona.
Bale set up Ronaldo for Real's 21st-minute opener before Schalke levelled 10 minutes later when a long-range Tim Hoogland effort deflected off Sergio Ramos and bounced past the stranded Iker Casillas.
Ronaldo took his tally in this year's Champions League to 13 goals with his second of the night in the 74th minute. Álvaro Morata added a third for Real a minute later after a Ronaldo effort came back off the crossbar.
It was Real's biggest aggregate Champions League win, beating their 8-2 victory over Apoel Nicosia in 2011-12.
Ronaldo's double meant he surpassed his previous best Champions League haul of 12 from last season and he has 41 in all competitions for Real, the La Liga leaders, this term.
